Energy Co-op is up for discussing local renewables

The next meeting of the NHTT’s Energy Group will begin a public discussion about locally-owned renewable energy in our area. NHTT recognises that it is better to begin the discussion now, rather than have developments happen on our doorstep, in which the community has no part.

Therefore NHTT is exploring the idea of an Energy Co-operative that is owned by members of the community. The community invests, and community benefits from the revenue & profits generated. Typically, individual members can invest between £250 and up to £20,000.

Energy 4 All are the organisation in Britain that has pioneered co-operative ownership of renewables, with examples all over the UK including 4 already up and running in Scotland; at Boyndie near Banff, near Fort Augustus in the Great Glen, on the Isle of Skye and at Kilbaur near Golspie.

The meeting will host Energy 4 ALL man Paul Phare. Paul will present the work of Energy 4 All in promoting and enabling community-based energy cooperative projects and we will discuss how their approach might work in our area.

NHTT Wins Scottish Green Award

Tom recently attended he Scottish Green Awards in Glasgow where he was delighted and slightly surprised to recieve the Scottish Green award for Best Community Initiative on behalf of the NHTT, ‘we were delighted to be chosen as finalists and are staggered to have won the award. There are a lot of community groups doing great things in Scotland just now and the competition was really very strong, but it’s great to have national recognition for what so many in our community have

achieved.’

Tom receives our award in Glasgow earlier in the month

Dr Richard Dixon, Director of WWF Scotland and chair of the judging panel for the Scottish Green Awards said:

“I and the other judges were particularly impressed with the comprehensive approach taken by NHTT to making their area more sustainable. From energy use to transport and food the group have had great ideas and followed them through over the last 2 years. North Howe Transition Toun provide a superb example of how even a small community can start to get to grips with what climate change and high oil prices will bring.”

I think there is cause for us all to be proud for our contribution over the passed few years and look forward to continuing to work together for a more sustainable future for our community.

Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards 2011

In this years Scotsman/Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards, our very own Tom Morton has made the shortlist of 4 contending for the prestigious Environmental Award.
Tom has built one of Scotland’s leading environmental design practices, Cupar based, Arc.
Tom’s new buildings progress the agenda for affordable and healthy Eco-homes. His work on NHTT’s CaRB project, is used as a best practice model by the Energy Saving Trust. His major report on using plants to protect buildings is to be published by Historic Scotland this month.

A Steady Return from Renewables

One of our members has alerted us to a new issue of shares by Triodos Renewables, in which he has been a contented shareholder for many years. This share issue is the latest is a series that provides capital to create new renewables capacity – that’s why we are mentioning here. Their website www.triodosrenewables.co.uk indicates a return of 9% although our member says around 6% has been achieved over the last few years from a preceding share – even that seems a heck of a lot better than the banks. Closing date for subscription is 30th August.

Solar Cities Scotland’s annual conference: Growing the Green Shoots of a Low Carbon Economy

Energy Group News

With the latest CCF funding bid not coming through for us we are now looking at new ways of taking our ideas forward. As a reminder, NHTT are currently interested in developing ideas about:

Wood-fuel strategy with local landowners and fuel users
Heat recovery from landfill site
Biomass district heating system for Collessie
Community owned Wind turbine project

This is a crucial stage in the development of sustainable energy services for our area, so if you are interested in a future with a secure energy supply with the possibility of local employment, we would encourage you to come along to our meetings, we have a small group of enthusiastic locals, but need to expand our group. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 19 April, get in touch with Louise for more information.

CaRB Report Card

The CaRB team finishes theirs at the end of last month and those of you who live within the NHTT area should already have received one of these through the post.
