Tom recently attended he Scottish Green Awards in Glasgow where he was delighted and slightly surprised to recieve the Scottish Green award for Best Community Initiative on behalf of the NHTT, ‘we were delighted to be chosen as finalists and are staggered to have won the award. There are a lot of community groups doing great things in Scotland just now and the competition was really very strong, but it’s great to have national recognition for what so many in our community have

achieved.’

Tom receives our award in Glasgow earlier in the month

Dr Richard Dixon, Director of WWF Scotland and chair of the judging panel for the Scottish Green Awards said:

“I and the other judges were particularly impressed with the comprehensive approach taken by NHTT to making their area more sustainable. From energy use to transport and food the group have had great ideas and followed them through over the last 2 years. North Howe Transition Toun provide a superb example of how even a small community can start to get to grips with what climate change and high oil prices will bring.”

I think there is cause for us all to be proud for our contribution over the passed few years and look forward to continuing to work together for a more sustainable future for our community.

Would you like to reduce the costs of driving and help to improve local air quality?

Car clubs provide a pool of cars that can be booked out for periods as short as an hour, at affordable rates. For people who drive less than 6-8,000 miles per year, this can be a cheaper option than running a car.

Interested in learning more? Then come along to Cupar YMCA at 7:30pm on Thursday 9th June at the YMCA. Sustainable Cupar and Carplus are holding an event where you can find out more about how car clubs work, hear about the car club recently established in Anstruther, and discuss whether one would be feasible in Cupar.

Refreshments will be provided.

Bike Parking & Paths on Course for Upgrade in the Howe

Great news for walkers, cyclists and disabled ramblers in the north Howe of Fife, a path improvement and bike parking project has received funding. North Howe Transition Toun (NHTT) has just been given final funding approval totalling £103,861. Leader Fife and Fife Environment Trust are the major funders, with the Climate Challenge Fund supporting the development phase.

“ We are really pleased with this news. The Group has been working hard over a two year period to create this project and get it funded. Now we can make a difference on the ground. ” said Crispin Hayes member of NHTT Transport Group “With our focus very much on reducing carbon emissions and making it easier to get about the area, we chose the paths due to their potential utility value; they can be used to cycle to work, school, the shops or other public transport nodes.”

The project will create 2500m of path upgraded to an all-abilities standard, together with bike parking facilities at 5 locations in the north of the Howe. The paths will create good quality links for routes from Letham to Cupar, and Collessie to Ladybank. All-abilities paths are suitable for walkers, disabled ramblers, wheelchair & power scooter users and cyclists. Most of the paths for upgrade are already part of the Core Path network.

Bike parking will be put at 5 transport nodes, these are useful places where bikes can be left tidy and secure, and then the cyclist can continue their onward journey by bus or car share. The proposed locations are at Charlottetown (Hall grounds), Collessie (bus shelter), Letham (Hall grounds), Bow of Fife and a further location beside the A92 near Ladybank.

This is the first stage of a long term project and eventually we would like to see a number of convenient off road routes running throughout the north of the Howe. For further information or to follow the project keep an eye on the webiste or get in touch with Louise.

As you all know the Transport Group has been busy carrying out feasibility work over the past 18 months looking into upgrading paths and installing bike parking throughout the NHTT area. We are delighted to announce that we have been formally offered funding from Leader in Fife and the Fife Environment Trust. The total cost of Paths to Transition Phase 1 will be £103,861.18 and we hope to get things started as soon as possible so keep and eye on future bulletins. Louise will be posting more details about the project on our Transport page soon.

The work done so far has been carried out thanks to the funding we received in 2009 from the Climate Challenge fund. If you would to find out a bit more about the work that the transport group have been doing on these CCF funded projects their final report is available to download by clicking on below.
