ACT LOCALLY, IMPACT GLOBALLYenergy

We are all aware of the ever increasing cost of energy to run our homes. This affects us all financially and as well as contributing to global warming. We are a group of local people who wish to reduce our energy bills and work towards an energy efficient community.

Our Energy Champion's are available to advise householders

As part of the NHTT community organisation, the Energy Group has a programme of projects funded through the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund.

In Autumn 2010 The Energy Group ran the NHTT COMMUNITY SURVEY which covered all areas of NHTT interest including food and transport. The information gathered in this survey was crucial for taking forward the CaRB PROJECT which is an 18-month programme to help home owners and businesses impliment the most cost effective way to improve the energy performance of their buildings.  We have also been working with Letham Primary School where Neil has helped raise awareness of energy issues and carried out an energy audit of the building.

Using the survey results the CaRB team have been working hard to develop a ‘TOOLKIT’ of the best ways to improve the energy efficiency of homes in our area, thus cutting your carbon footprint and your energy bills. We posted a copy of the Toolkit out to each household in the NHTT area. Click on the below image to download the toolkit:

Our 4 energy champions have been speaking to householders in the area and finding out which of the energy saving measures are best suited to their homes. We have secured funding to subsidise some of the more popular measures including loft and cavity wall insulation and draughtproofing measures. Our aim is to help make homes in our area warmer, more energy efficient and therefore reduce our commuities carbon emissions.

SMART MONITORS

Smart Monitors have allowed households to view their electricity consumption

Each household that took part in our community survey was offered the use of a smart monitor to allow them to monitor their electricity consumption. The Smart Monitor Project will continue until March 2011 and many residents have chosen to keep their monitor for the duration of the project. One household discovered the clock on their mocrowave was costing them £47 per year!

WHAT NEXT?

Looking forward we are working on ways to improve the energy efficiency of the three VILLAGE HALLS in the area. We also have an ambitious COMMUNITY RENEWABLES Project. We will also continue to work with Letham Primary School and are currently looking into an exciting wind turbine project.
