The NHTT Local Food Group is a mixture of local people mostly from the North Howe area who are keen on local food. Some of us like to grow it, some of us like to rear it, brew it, talk about it and all of us like to eat it!
With funding from The Climate Challenge Fund, The Food Group have been carrying forward a number of projects. We are always keen to provide our members with the talks and workshops they want as part of our commitment to Reskilling.
We are one of the action groups which are part of the NHTT. The NHTT has sustainability and local community resilience at the heart of its movement. The Local Food Group encourages people to look towards local food either through growing, rearing or sourcing it from local producers and suppliers. We like to listen to what people are interested in doing and take action as a result. We believe in reducing food miles and helping people overcome barriers to be able to access local food.
Our meetings are informal and open to all. In May 2010 we took our meeting outdoors with coffee and a barter on Monimail Green followed by a garden snoop taking a tour of some of the gardens and small holdings in Monimail.
We like to combine meetings with talks and film screenings which have included:
- Fife Beekeepers
- Master Composters
- The Newburgh Orchard Group
- ‘In Transition’ film
WHAT ELSE HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?
As well as arranging meetings, talks and workshops we have been carrying out work on a number of CCF funded projects:
In autumn 2009 we purchased THE COMMUNITY APPLE PRESS . This is available for use by the local community. We celebrated the completion at a community apple day with the Monimail Tower Project
In partnership with the Monimail Tower Project we have created a small scale THE GREEN LIBRARY which contains books to help us relearn the skills required to live more sustainable lives and prepare ourselves for a post peak oil world. The Library is located in Monimail Tower.
Next to the NHTT Shed in the Monimail Tower Project car park we are piloting the GARDEN SUPPLIES PILOT PROJECT. We have created a local depot for bulk gardening supplies such as manure and leaf mould. Local residents can come along and fill their barrow.
We have arranged a number of succesful community events. In 2009 we held THE LOCAL FOOD FESTIVAL in Letham Park and in 2010 we had a FOOD SKILLS DAY in Letham Hall.
ONGOING PROJECTS…
Community Bulk Buying- We are working to set up a community bulk buying scheme that will allow us to bulk by local produce at a more affordable price and also essential items that we cannot get locally to allow people to be able to afford to make ethical purchasing decisions.
Community Bake House- We are carrying out feasibility work which aims to see a community bakery set up within the NHTT area providing quality handmade bread.
Food Facilitation- As part of the great Reskilling we work alongside local people to help them reskill in the areas they need to and in the end develop skills. As such we are held a Family Food Reskilling Day in summer 2010 where workshops included bird processing, seafood preparation, food smoking, pasta making, bread making, canning.
Keep and eye on the bulletin and Calendar for upcoming events and meetings.
