The NHTT Local Food Group is a mixture of local peoplemostly from the North Howe area who are keen on local food. Some of us like to grow it, some of us like to rear it, brew it, talk about it and all of us like to eat it!
What are we about?

We are one of the action groups which are part of the NHTT. The NHTT has sustainability and local community resilience at the heart of its movement. The Local Food Group encourages people to look towards local food either through growing, rearing or sourcing it from local producers and suppliers. We like to listen to what people are interested in doing and take action as a result. We believe in reducing food miles and helping people overcome barriers to be able to access local food.
Who can participate?
Anyone who is interested in local food initiatives and believes in sustainability, caring for our planet, in the reduction of carbon emissions to positively affect climate change and building resilience back into our community.
How we communicate:

Along with the general North Howe Transition Toun Bulletin there is also an NHTT LFG email list where information is circulated to group members specifically in relation to Food Issues. We can send information by post if you are not ‘e’. We meet once a month and meetings are friendly and informal.

Our Projects
Community Apple Press: The NHTT Local Food Group has purchased 2 apple crushers and presses which are available for use by anyone within the community. Whether your crop is large or small we have the equipment for you at a cost of £5 per day for those within the NHTT, £10 for those out with or free for NHTT members
Community Garden: We aim to help increase growing and use of seasonal fruit and vegetables locally and as part of this we will be looking into the feasibility of having community allotments. There is already a community garden set up in Monimail which is well used by members of the community of all ages
Garden Supplies Project: We are looking to create a local depot for bulk gardening supplies such as manure and leaf mould. A feasibility study is currently underway for the pilot which will be run in Monimail. If this is succesful we would like to see supply points throughout the NHTT area.
Series of Food Workshops & Talks One of our key aims is to raise awareness and facilitate re-skilling within the community in all aspects of food growing, preservation and preparation. We are working with Elmwood College and the Monimail Tower Project to provide a wide variety of informative and educational talks and workshops. More details of these can be found on our website.
Community Bulk Buying Scheme & Pilot Pick Up Depot: We plan to get a community bulk buying scheme up and running that will allow us to bulk by local produce at a more affordable price and also essential items that we cannot get locally to allow people to be able to afford to make ethical purchasing decisions. How the scheme is set up is under discussion – some ideas are a food coop with a pilot pick up point
