Item 2 Thanks to Tony Wilson, Fife Ranger Service for his Fungi Talk!

The NHTT Food Group would like to say a big thank you to Tony and Bramble the dog for coming to do the fungi talk at our November meeting. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and were really keen to do a fungi walk with Tony in Spring/Autumn time. There is also talk of a beach seafood foray!

Item 3 Food Low Carbon Route Map:

This document has some interesting info re where our CO2 emissions come from in relation to food and how certain changes can help reduce our food CO2 footprints.

Item 4 NHTT Food Survey Data – Wee Summary

89% of us could improve on the frequency of travelling for shopping as we mainly travel every few days/ weekly

We shop equally in local shops and supermarkets

82% yes to local food directory – equal for ‘e’ and printed version

69% eat some organic food

86% would eat more organic if cheaper 39% if readily available

52% grow some food ourselves

81% would support a local bakery

14% of us know of land that can be used for allotments

52% of us compost food waste

79% would be interested in rearing poultry

28% would be interested in rearing pigs

34% would be interested in keeping bees

76% were interested in attending a jams and preserves workshop

82% were interested in attending a bread & baking workshop

67% were interested in attending a wine and beer making workshop

95% were interested in attending an apples and cultivation workshop

96& were interested in attending a game preparation workshop

96% were interested in attending a smoking workshop

98% were interested in gathering wild food – mushrooms etc.

32% are interested in a bartering network

47% are interested in community bulk buying

76% not interested in a bulk food store for winter veggies

31% are interested in getting compost locally

64% didn’t want to be involved in our local food group but 28% of you did!

Item 5 Proposed NHTT Food Workshops/Events for 2010:

The Food Group agreed that in 2010 we would really like to do more practical food things, so combining what has been requested through the Food Group and the NHTT survey data, have a look at the first cut of the programme for 2010, comments really helpful……to Hayley. We thought we could continue holding sub group meetings around specific projects and talk business in amongst the food events. We are also looking for locally skilled people who can do the workshops, have a look below and see what you or someone you know can do and contact Hayley with details.

January: Chicken & Pig Small Holding Talk – Dan & Andy

Do some Food Group business at the meeting

February: Wine and Beer Making Workshop

March/April: Fungi Food Foray with Tony Wilson, Fife Ranger Service

Do some Food Group business outside at end in the woods

May: Keeping Bees Workshop – could we actually have some community owned hives and set them up through the workshop? Any ideas where we could keep them?

June: Outdoor Clay Oven Building & Baking Workshop @ someone’s house who wants one – Monimail Tower Project – Bring a dish and eat and enjoy food baked – do some Food Group business while enjoying our food and baked bread

August: Pig Butchering & Processing – Elmwood College

September: Jams and Preserves Workshop – squeeze some Food Group business at end

October: Monimail Tower Project Apple Day – could be build apple cultivation into that too?

Item 6 CCF Bake House Feasibility Project:

The Food Group are looking for a volunteer to take this project forward, the NHTT survey data suggest that 81% would support a local bakery but we don’t have someone with the passion and drive to take this forward. If you can commit to this project to deliver it in accordance with the project timescale which is early next year, then please contact Hayley otherwise the Food Group will require to ask for the monies to be reallocated to another project if possible. 82% of the community also said that they were interested in bread & baking workshops!! Any drive and energy here?

Item 7 Local Food Directory:

The Food Group have always been keen to get a local food directory together but we wanted to wait and see what the survey said to see if our community wanted one – 82% said yes to having a local food directory, with equal interest in an ‘e’ and printed version. Any offers from people to do some work around this? If so please contact Hayley.

Item 8 Community Bulk Buying Sub Group meeting Date:

At the last Food Group meeting we decided that a sub group meeting would be held to allow interested parties to take this project forward – meeting date tbc soon

Our NHTT survey data says that 69% of you eat some organic food and 86% would eat more organic food if cheaper, 39% if it was readily available. Our community bulk buying scheme will provide cheaper organic and environmentally friendly products and will be more readily available as we plan to have it delivered in bulk to our community! Therefore reducing travelling CO2 emissions.
