The North Howe Transition Toun Food Group and Monimail Tower Project have been working in partnership to create a small scale Transition re-skilling library set in the ancient and unique Monimail Tower. Hayley Mills, who is an active member of the Transition Food Group, said “the idea of a re-skilling library is to provide practical information that allows people to develop the skills that will be needed for a more localised and sustainable way of living.”monimail_tower1

The opening of the library will take place on Sunday 22 November 12-2pm at Monimail Tower, Monimail, KY15 7RJ. This will be a free event. There will a cutting of an eco ribbon, some local eco poets, an ‘open eco mic’ and a delicious local meat and vegetarian BBQ.

‘Open Eco Mic’ – this will be an opportunity for people to contribute an eco poem or a short eco reading that they have written or is particularly meaningful to them. If people aren’t brave enough to read it out, they can post it up on a board for others to read on the day!

To give you an idea of the range of books The Green Library will have, there are the following subjects:

Local Food, Growing, Small Holding, Fish, Permaculture, Preserving, Eco Building and Renovation, Home Brewing, Energy Descend, Transport, Heart & Soul, Aquaculture, Woodland, Transition, Peak Oil, Local Livelihoods and Economics, Sustainability, Crafts, Nature, Baking, Cooking & a Children’s section. Relevant topical donations to the library are most welcome – if you are keen to donate books please contact Hayley The full catalogue will be available on line soon.

“This library promises to be an important resource for developing the skills we need in our local communities with a view to climate change and oil depletion” said Hamid van Koten, who is also a member of the North Howe Transition Toun.

Membership is free for members of MTP & NHTT, £5 yearly for people within the NHTT area who are not members & £10 yearly for those out with. People can join on the day and take away books by filling in a membership form. For people that can’t make it on the day further details will be available at on our website.
